Links and backlinks

Wiki-links between notes, embeds, backlinks, unlinked mentions and the graph.

Links are what turn a folder of documents into a vault. Link a scene to the characters in it, and each character's page can tell you every scene they appear in.

Type [[ in the editor. A list of notes appears; keep typing to narrow it, and press Enter.

You typeYou get
[[Mira Vale]]A link to the note called Mira Vale
[[Mira Vale#Backstory]]A link to the "Backstory" heading inside that note
[[Mira Vale|the archivist]]A link to Mira Vale that reads "the archivist"

A link points at the note itself, not at its name. Rename the note and every link to it shows the new name.

Hover over a link to preview the note. Click it to open it.

Embeds

Put an exclamation mark in front, ![[Note]], and the note's content is shown inside the page you are writing. The embed is a live, read-only view: change the original and the embed changes too. Click it to open the original.

The Links tab of the inspector shows, for the note that is open:

  • Backlinks: every note that links to this one.
  • Outgoing links: every note this one links to.
  • Unlinked mentions: places where this note's name appears as plain text without a link. One click turns a mention into a link.

Unlinked mentions are how you find the three scenes where you wrote a character's name before you gave them a page.

The list of links is rebuilt from the text a few seconds after you stop typing, so a new link takes a moment to show up as a backlink.

The graph

The graph view (⌘G) draws every note as a dot and every link as a line.

  • Global shows the whole project. Local shows one note and what is around it. "Open local graph of current note" in the command palette opens it for the note you are in.
  • Filter by kind, and colour by group, to see only characters or only places.
  • Turn on orphans to find notes that nothing links to.
  • Click a dot to open the note.

Shared worlds

A project can use another project in the same workspace as its world: a book and its sequel can share one set of characters and places. The world's pages appear in the codex and can be linked with [[. You see them only if you have access to that project too.

Two limits to know about: it goes one level deep (a world can't have a world of its own), and links into the shared world don't show up in backlinks or the graph.
